PG Impact Investments commits to fund 400 new affordable homes in South Africa

PG Impact Investments, a global impact investment firm, has recently invested in an affordable housing program aiming to create more than 20,000 new homes in South Africa.

In a country with one of the highest levels of economic inequality in the world, more than 5 million South African households currently face the challenge that their income is too high to qualify for public housing programs yet too low to afford quality and safe homes, forcing these families into informal housing. PGII’s investment will address this gap in South Africa’s housing supply, targeting underserved communities that represent 26% of the total population.

Safe, high-quality and well-located affordable housing, which provides access to social amenities, has a profound tangible impact on the lives and overall welfare of residents. With this most recent investment, PGII will fund 400 new homes in areas close to schools, employment and healthcare infrastructure, allowing more than 1,600 people a chance at shelter, security and the first step toward social inclusion and integration into the formal economy.

Additionally, 20% of these affordable housing units will include EDGE-certified ‘green’ technology to reduce usage of water, electricity and building materials. This will help to lower household expenses while promoting environmentally friendly practices.

Our investment is part of a program managed by International Housing Solutions (IHS), an experienced and longstanding developer of affordable housing in South Africa. The program aims to deliver a total of 20,000 homes for rental and sale by 2021, developing sustainable communities and creating local jobs.
